IFC & Fleet Ship Management (FML): Validating Ship-to-Shore Security Responses

The IFC recently participated in ship-to-shore security drill with Fleet Management Limited (FML) to test and validate shipboard and shore- based emergency response protocols.

The exercise simulated a suspected armed robbery attempt involving an FML bulk carrier transiting the Malacca Strait. It tested key shipboard self-protection measures, including BMP5 procedures, evasive maneuvering and mock SSAS activation.

The scenario placed both the vessel's command team and shore-side management in a realistic operational setting, requiring rapid assessment and decision-making under pressure. Upon detecting an unlit, high-speed craft on a closing vector, the vessel heightened its maritime security posture, implemented deck hardening measures and initiated immediate incident reporting to the CSO and the IFC.

The exercise also tested the rapid flow of information between the vessel, commercial operator, IFC and littoral states' enforcement agencies. This highlighted the critical role of timely information sharing and public-private collaboration in strengthening maritime domain awareness and enabling a coordinated response to maritime security incidents.

By establishing direct and verified communication lines between commercial operators, regional navies, coast guards and Malacca Strait Patrol (MSP) assets, the exercise underscored the importance of coordinated action in responding to evolving maritime security threats.

Such practical exercises strengthen shared response capabilities, build confidence among stakeholders and contribute to the resilience and security of vital shipping lanes.

Together, we can achieve Safe and Secure Seas for All!
