IFC & Columbia Shipmanagement (CSM): Validating Ship-to-Shore Security Responses
On 16 July 26, the IFC participated in a ship-to- shore security drill with CSM to validate emergency response workflows under the ISPS Code.
The exercise simulated a dynamic bomb threat onboard one of CSM's multi-purpose vessels, challenging participants to respond to a high- severity security incident under realistic operational conditions. Key response measures tested included shipboard search and isolation procedures by the crew, port authority notifications, and timely coordination between the CSO and the IFC watchfloor.
Managing the simulated incident across multiple time zones highlighted the borderless nature of modern maritime crisis management and reinforced the importance of clear, timely communication between ship and shore-based stakeholders.
To enhance the realism of the exercise, ILOs provided localised, open-source expertise on vessel trade routes and port configurations. Their inputs enabled the scenario to better reflect real- world operating conditions while demonstrating how the IFC's real-time information-sharing capabilities can complement a ship manager's emergency response framework.
The exercise reaffirmed the value of close public- private collaboration in strengthening maritime security, enhancing operational readiness, and safeguarding merchant vessels and their crews.
The IFC extends its appreciation to the CSM teams in Singapore and Cyprus for organising and executing this highly coordinated exercise.
Together, we can achieve Safe and Secure Seas for All!
